I have a pair of correct woofers if anybody is looking or can make a deal on those 15's and wants to make them "right".
Your neighbors called. They like your music.

I just emailed the guy for yucks. He insists they are the original woofers.
That other speaker looks like it has a ribbed cone. Did Altec ever make one?
They made 15 inch woofers with ribbed cones. Those are 15 inch woofers in those model 15's.
Model 15 NEVER had a 15 inch woofer in it unless hacked in there by a clueless buffoon similar to the fella selling those. The cabinets are ruined.
411-8A/16A and the 616-8A duplex both have ribbed cones. Both are 15 inch, both have 4 inch voice coils. The 411 is ferrite, the 616 is alnico and claimed to have an LF section that is essentially a clone of the LE-15. Neither are even remotely close to the 33785 woofer.
33785 started life with a stamped steel basket and was made by CTS, those early versions can be found in early model 9's and 15's. AFAIK, all of the cast frame 33785's were built in house by Altec using the same motors and moving assemblies used in the early steel versions.

He also says in his ad that he's the original owner who bought the Model 15's in the 80's. Obviously not true as the Model 15's were only produced from 1976 to 1978--they were then "replaced" in the Altec line by the Model 14's.....
You mean bigger isn't always better?
I agree--they will not sound right with the wrong woofers. That speaker system (crossover, cabinet, etc.) is all designed for the original woofers. Good luck to future owners trying to get the right/original woofer into that (now) 15 inch hole. The original woofers for those had a 13 1/2 " frame (early versions had a 12" frame)......

Being of "Sound" Mind
I agree that there's a deception on the seller's part somewhere. He also claims to have paid "well over" $1000 for them.He also says in his ad that he's the original owner who bought the Model 15's in the 80's. I know it's possible to have bought new models even a few years after they were discontinued, overstock/leftovers, and floor models are some examples. My bro bought his 17's new in January of '80 for $925.
So, it's possible that he could have bought them new in the early 80's. But, if he truly paid in excess of a grand, the seller saw him coming from a long long way off.
IMO, this seller seems more determined to deceive than he is honest.
FWIW, here are a pair of early 15's with the CTS built steel framed woofers. Note they are not recessed into the baffle like the later models 15's using the cast frame woofer.
